Dress from U.S.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone bought their dress in the U.S. and had it shipped? With the dollar exchange being what it is, I've found 'my' dress for $700 cheaper in the STates. BUt I'm wondering what the border will charge me? ANy ideas ? (ie: is it a % of the dress price?)

I could go to Seattle and buy it or there is a US online bridal store that ships it with no tax. I just am worried about the border... Please let me know if you have any tips...

I mail order a lot from the US. However, I never tried shipping a dress from the US.

The courier or Canada Post will definitely charge you GST when the dress arrives Vancouver. They don't automatically charge you PST. You are supposed to report PST by yourself . Depending on the courier companies, you might have to pay a brokerage fee (some charge $50) for custom clearance. I know that both UPS Expedit and UPS World Express include the brokerage for free. If your dress is shipped by US Postal Service, you also don't pay brokerage fee. You might have to pay duties as well. This is the tricky part. You can look up http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-com...blmod-1-e.html for details.... NOT easy to understand at all! It depends on the material of the dress. You can give CBSA a call.

I highly recommend shipping by UPS Expedit. It is the cheapest courier service around. I am very happy with them so far.

Hey...I was thinking of doing the opposite. I live in the Seattle area and with the recent change in the exchange rate I would see if I could find something in the Vancouver area, and have a fun little weekend vacation!

So, I've been doing some research about how long that weekend trip would be in order to avoid declaring the dress. To enter the US, which I assume would be pretty similar to entering Can, is that if you are abroad less than 48 hours you can only bring $200 USD back w/o declaration, more than 48 hours allows you up to $800 USD w/o declaring. There is no increase beyond a more than 48 hour stay. I got this info from calling US customs office. I'll guess you could get the same info from the Canadian customs office.

However, I'm not sure if the same rules apply to e-commerce transactions. I can also tell you that I work for a company that has a e-comm division. Our vendors will not ship over the border, and our Canadian e-comm division will not ship to the US.

I hope this helps a little, or a lot.
