Camcorder vs. videography dude

Will a videographer company edit the video taken by someone on a camcorder after the wedding? Me and my fiance are thinking of getting a couple of our friends to shoot various parts of the wedding and then getting someone who is good at videoediting to set certain scenes to music, etc. Does anyone have any approximate idea this costs?

Many videographers provide video editing service. The cost will vary depending on how much editing is required, i.e. the amount of effects. For the most basic editing (cutting out the most boring and unuseable footage), it may cost around $300-$500 for the ceremony. But to make the wedding video more interesting to watch, higher-level editing is required. In that case, the cost can vary quite a bit depending on the skill of the videographer.

If you decide to do it yourself, for basic editing, you can try a consumer-type editing software called Ulead (note that learning this software on your own may not be easy). Also keep in mind that you will need a computer with lots of RAM and harddisk space for running this program smoothly throughout editing. If you do it yourself, the material cost will be the software (not sure how much) and the DVDs (very cheap). The editing time required will largely depend on the experience of the editor. For an amateur, it will take around 30-40 hours (excluding time to learn the editing software) to complete simple editing of a typical wedding ceremony.

I also have this dilemma of wanting videography for my wedding but not having enough money in my budget to cover both a good photographer and a videographer.

Based on the research I've done over the last month it seems that the reason videographers are so expensive is largely due to (a) the amount of time they have to spend at your wedding with their professional equipment for the extensive coverage, and (b) the amount of editing they have to do going through the hours of footage they have recorded.

I thought I'd be able to reduce the cost by only getting coverage of key events. I've phoned a few videographers and they won't come out for just the ceremony. I'm looking into craigslist now...

If anybody has recommendations please help!

Sandy,

If you only want a simple record of the ceremony on video (as opposed to a fancy music video style wedding video), it should not be too difficult to do it yourself and save the money (have a friend do it for you is what I mean, of course, lol!) Refer to my post above for the DIY guide!

Yeah... although I'd love to have the fancy wedding video I think I may have to settle for what you're suggesting. Afterall it's important to not go into further debt as a result of having the wedding! ;-)

Thanks, beleebala!

Videographer

We've had the same problem, we can't afford to spend a lot on photography/videography (approx $1500 or less budget), but I still want them done. I think we have found a comprimize though.

Photography- we are going to hire a professional photographer to do only the formal shoot of the wedding party and ourselves. Some photographers offer short wedding packages (2-3 hours, one location) for under $500, if you ask them. I have a couple family members with professional grade cameras, that do photography as a hobby, so we are going to have them snap pictures durring the ceremony. I'm sure everyone will bring there digitals, and we are going to put disposables on the tables, so that should cover the reception.

Videography- we are going to hire a videographer to cover the ceremony and part of the reception. From there we can give the videographer the professional pictures and any shots from the ceremony and reception that we like, and they will edit them into the wedding DVD. Try www.trandee.com. Their 'basic' package includes upto 20 hours of editing, for $900.

Let me know if anyone has anymore 'creative' photo/video ideas

I'm not sure if this is something you wanted. YET it definelty can be cheaper. What we are doing (actually my photographer includes 3 of them with our package) is he takes the pictures and puts them onto a cd type video and we pick music that we want for the background. It's like a slide show. It's an idea.

Red face

I just saw a very impressive montage that was made from my friend's wedding. It included photos as well as video from my friend's wedding day. Basically my friend had about 1000 photos from her wedding day (photographer and family and friends combined) plus some home video that friends shot off and on during the day, so she collected the best photos and the best video clips, had them made into a very nice DVD complete with personalized menus and everything. And they even used the music from their first dance as the background music. It was beautiful, and it cost them less than $300. I've just set up an appointment with the people who did her DVD. I'll probably go with them. Their website is www.ImageStreamDesigns.com, for those of you who are interested in checking it out.

I can't find your website, or your husband's website for videography. Can you PM me? I'm new to this and still trying to figure out where to look for things.

Were you trying to access the above DIY link or you want to visit our company website? Any, I have fixed the DIY link. It should work now: http://www.isentropic.com/DIY_tips.html

As for our company website, let me PM you as this area should be commercial-free!
